Be more open on RM2bil AI cloud project, experts urge govt

Cybersecurity experts are urging the Malaysian government to be more transparent about the RM2 billion AI cloud project. The lack of updates since its announcement in the 2026 Budget has left many questions unanswered. T Murugason, a cybersecurity practitioner, emphasized the need for careful planning and execution of the project, which involves introducing secure local infrastructure to keep critical government data within national borders.

Transparency in international technology partnerships is particularly crucial, as the goal is to avoid digital dependence on foreign tech. Murugason called for disclosure of international companies contributing to the project and the nature of those partnerships. Jay Chooi, an adviser to the National Tech Association of Malaysia's AI chapter, stressed that the project's success depends on the cloud being genuinely under Malaysia's control and operation.

He explained that having a well-run sovereign cloud would give all Malaysians access to AI without relying on infrastructure in other countries. Chooi warned that unexpectedly losing access to AI could disrupt the entire nation, especially as it becomes increasingly crucial for people's economic livelihoods. Both experts emphasized that transparency in the RM2 billion project is not an optional public relations exercise but a strategic necessity for Malaysia's AI ambitions.
