Be more open on RM2bil AI cloud project, experts urge govt

Cybersecurity experts are urging the Malaysian government to be more transparent about the RM2 billion sovereign AI cloud project. T Murugason, CEO of Novem CS, notes that the project's scale necessitates careful planning and execution, but the lack of updates since its 2026 Budget announcement has created uncertainty. Murugason emphasizes the importance of transparency regarding international technology partnerships, as the goal is to avoid digital dependence on foreign tech.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will oversee the development of secure, local infrastructure to keep critical government data within national borders. Jay Chooi, an adviser to the National Tech Association of Malaysia’s AI chapter, stresses that the project's success relies on genuine Malaysian control and operation, ensuring Malaysians have access to AI without relying on foreign infrastructure.

Chooi highlights the potential future use of AI in national infrastructure and warns that losing access to AI could disrupt the nation. He also stresses the need for disclosure on whether the project involves a single tech provider or multiple vendors, emphasizing that transparency is a strategic necessity for the RM2 billion project.

The experts argue that one of the project's key benefits is stronger protection of personal and national data, ensuring sensitive information remains subject to Malaysian jurisdiction.
