BCCI officials to meet chief selector Agarkar about tenure extension

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials are set to meet with Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, following India's two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The meeting is to discuss a one-year extension to Agarkar's tenure. Agarkar, a former Indian all-rounder, will have completed three years as chairman by September, but is allowed a one-year extension under the rules.

The meeting is prompted by disagreements between selectors and BCCI regarding the future of former India captain Rohit Sharma. After the England series, selectors had informed Sharma that they intended to replace him in the squad upon its conclusion in July. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia contradicted this, stating that Sharma would continue representing the country as long as he remained part of their plans.

BCCI officials desire the selectors to evaluate Sharma's future series by series before the 50-over World Cup in 2027. Sharma, who has scored 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka, made 138 in the third against Sri Lanka at Lord's on July 19. Sharma, who only plays ODIs, reportedly discussed his situation with several BCCI officials during the England series and was unhappy with the decision of the selectors to consider others like Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of him.

Sources indicate that Sharma may be included in the squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies. Despite the differences, Saikia affirmed that Sharma will continue representing India as long as he remains part of their plans, emphasizing that the Lord's ODI will not be Sharma's last match.
