Atiku, Obi, others’ summit shifted to August 31

The planned assembly of opposition political parties led by the G-100 has been rescheduled from August 18 to August 31, 2026. This change was made to allow parties to conduct further consultations following the National Peace Summit. The group is advocating for a united front and a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 election.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who are the presidential candidates of the African Democratic Congress and Nigeria Democratic Congress respectively, are among the expected attendees. The decision to delay the summit was based on consultations with six participating opposition parties and minority caucus members of the House of Representatives.

The group believes that a fragmented opposition would struggle to defeat Tinubu in the upcoming election. The G-100 emphasized that the intervening period would provide additional time to refine proposals and frameworks for the August 31 meeting. The consultations have been described as "frank, substantive and encouraging," with a recognition across parties that this is an important moment for Nigeria's democracy.
