As PKR grapples with departures, Anwar makes fresh appeal for estranged old friends to return

On August 15, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called on former PKR leaders and members to return to the party, apologizing for any perceived marginalization. The request came as PKR grappled with internal tensions and recent departures, including Subang MP Wong Chen, who resigned earlier this week, and former leaders Chua Tian Chang and Dr Xavier Jayakumar, who attended the party's 2026 National Congress.

Anwar urged the "old hands" to join him on the path of their struggle, particularly those who may have felt sidelined. The call for unity follows PKR's poor performance in recent elections, particularly in Johor, Sabah, and Negeri Sembilan. Women's information chief Ginie Lim posted photos with Chua and Dr Xavier at the congress, highlighting a notable reunion.

Chua was expelled from PKR after running as an independent, while Dr Xavier resigned in 2021. Wong, who served PKR for 17 years, left the party on August 10 to join Bersatu. PKR is also uncertain about its deputy presidency, as Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah has requested to resign, only to be placed on temporary leave and reassigned duties.

Despite retaining only two of its five state seats in Negeri Sembilan, Anwar seeks to strengthen internal cohesion as PKR prepares for the next election.
