‘Arrogance of power’ is driving voters back to NPP in Ashanti Region – Paul Adom-Otchere

Journalist Paul Adom-Otchere alleges that disillusionment with the "arrogance of power" in the current administration is drawing some voters back to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region. During the NPP Ashanti Regional Executive elections, Adom-Otchere pointed out that voters who previously remained undecided between the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) are increasingly critical of the government.

He explained that over the past 1.5 years, this dissatisfaction has been galvanizing NPP support in the region. Adom-Otchere noted that the NPP has historically struggled to attract voters who do not strongly support either of the two major parties; however, his administration might be changing that trend. He accused government officials, such as regional ministers and MMDCEs, of exhibiting excessive authority, likening them to military commanders.

This perceived overreach has annoyed local residents, who are questioning the administration's motives. Furthermore, Adom-Otchere criticized the demolition of existing structures for government projects, specifically markets under the 24-hour economy initiative. He questioned the necessity of new markets when Ghana already has established centers like Asafo, Adum, Kejetia, and Makola.

These markets have existed for over 180 years, including Asafo Market, which predates Ghana's independence. Adom-Otchere also mentioned the destruction of schools and banks to clear space for these new projects, causing public frustration. He believes these actions are contributing to the NDC's growing dissatisfaction, especially in Ashanti, a region traditionally supportive of the NPP.

According to Adom-Otchere, the public's growing frustration could have significant political ramifications for the NDC in the region, potentially leading to a return of the NPP to power.
