After nearly 30 years, a man is on trial in the fatal shooting of Tupac Shakur. Here’s what to know

On September 7, 1996, hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas. The incident took place during the presidencies of Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, as the Atlanta Olympics had recently concluded and the internet was still in its early stages. Shakur, known for his monumental album "All Eyez on Me," was surrounded by figures from the music industry, including Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight.

A brawl ensued outside a fight between Shakur and Knight, involving Davis' nephew Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson. This altercation allegedly led to Davis' involvement in Shakur's shooting. Shakur was shot multiple times and passed away six days later, while Knight survived with minor injuries. The trial, starting in Las Vegas, aims to shed light on the long-standing feud between rival record labels Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records, as well as rival gang sects Mob Piru and South Side Compton Crips.

Prosecutors allege Davis orchestrated the shooting, charging him with one count of murder with a deadly weapon. The trial is expected to last about a month, with a potential jury of 16 people. Davis has pleaded not guilty, with his defense arguing there is insufficient evidence linking him to the shooting, while prosecutors work to prove he was the mastermind behind the act of retaliation.
