7.7 magnitude Indonesia quake: 38 killed, buildings collapse; 5 visuals of devastation

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia early Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least 38 people. The powerful tremor caused buildings to collapse, triggered landslides, and forced residents to flee their homes in search of safety. Images and videos shared on social media revealed the extent of the devastation, with rubble-strewn streets, clouds of dust from collapsed structures, and people rushing out of buildings.

Rescue and relief operations were underway across the country, with rescue teams struggling to access affected areas due to blocked roads and damaged infrastructure.

Nona, a 51-year-old resident of Talibura, recounted the experience: "The quake was massive, the shock was so strong, we were resting at home with family. We all ran to save ourselves." At least 13 people were injured, including two seriously, and around 2,000 residents sought shelter in temporary accommodations. The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency reported the earthquake's impact, noting that landslides and power outages disrupted communications in some regions.

Rescue teams had not yet reached Nagekeo, the area closest to the epicenter, as landslides impeded road access.

In another part of the region, Ritapiret Seminary experienced a collapsed roof during morning Mass. Rev. Guidelbertus Tanga, the seminary's rector, said, "Our students and nuns ran out in panic beneath a collapsing roof." A tsunami warning was issued for parts of eastern Indonesia but was later lifted after waves of less than one meter were recorded in several areas. Later in the day, another 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the country near Northern Sumatra.
