5 Shot At Virginia State University, 1 Critical As Police Probe Multiple Shooters

A shooting at Virginia State University left five people wounded on Saturday, prompting an immediate campus lockdown. The incident occurred near the university's Quad Annexes, and both Chesterfield County police and campus police are conducting the investigation. Upon arrival, officers found five individuals with gunshot wounds outside dormitories. One victim, initially listed as having life-threatening injuries, has since been upgraded to a critical condition. The other four victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Virginia State University, a historically Black institution located in Ettrick, Virginia, has approximately 5,700 students and is the first fully state-supported four-year college for Black Americans. The university had recently welcomed students back to its residence halls and was set to begin classes on Monday, just a week after the shootings.

The university released a statement confirming multiple suspects were involved and urged the campus community to avoid the immediate area while law enforcement executed their investigation. Local authorities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office, are assisting in the case. Virginia State Police have deferred all questions to local law enforcement, which they claim is leading the investigation. More updates are expected later in the day.
