On the eve of the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation, a display at Seoul's U-sand District History Museum showcased over 13,000 "collaboration records" compiled by Japanese university student Danyukai Miyagi (19). Miyagi, who is studying Korean literature at Kobe University, spent time exploring the exhibitions, reflecting on the Japanese occupation's brutal impact on people's lives and emotions.

He noted, "I realized that not only did the Japanese Empire pillage resources, but it also controlled the lives and minds of the Korean people." The National Institute for Korean-Lee Studies inaugurated a special exhibition titled "History Made by Citizens Together to Change the World," emphasizing the significance of the 1,300-plus "collaboration cards" penned by historian Jang In-gook (1929-1989).

These meticulously cataloged cards, which took 18 years to complete, now serve as the basis for the "Collaboration Dictionary," listing 4,389 names and actions of those involved in wartime collaboration. Despite being published 17 years ago, recent controversy surrounding actress Kang Young's great-grandfather, An Soon-ho, reignited interest in the dictionary's role in documenting and verifying wartime collaboration.

At the museum, six Japanese visitors joined the Korean audience, with Kyoto University student Kadaya Tomoki (22) acknowledging the violent nature of Japanese colonial rule while emphasizing the need to address the hardships faced by Koreans under the collaboration system. The Collaboration Dictionary Continuation Committee continues to refine the dictionary and promote online accessibility, showcasing how historical interpretations evolve to address contemporary social justice issues. The exhibition remains free and open to the public until the end of the year.
