‘Your background does not determine your destiny’ – UG Dean of Student Affairs tells youth

The Director of Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, recently addressed young people at the annual Empower Vault Summit, emphasizing the importance of courage, resilience, and discipline in turning dreams and talents into reality. Prof. Kyerematen stressed that possessing talent and aspirations alone was insufficient; young individuals must be willing to act, learn continuously, and remain persistent in the face of obstacles to reach their full potential.

During the event, which took place on August 14 at the University of Ghana's Great Hall, Prof. Kyerematen highlighted that the diverse talents and aspirations of young people could lead to exceptional achievements if they are paired with determined action and perseverance. She urged attendees not to let their backgrounds or current circumstances hinder their ambitions, asserting that personal determination and hard work could significantly shape their futures.

The Dean of Student Affairs stressed the crucial role of the connections and knowledge gained through leadership and mentorship programs at such events. According to Prof. Kyerematen, the relationships and insights formed during these gatherings can lead to new opportunities, bolstering participants' careers and societal contributions. She emphasized that the skills, experiences, and knowledge acquired during the summit could unlock doors to promising career prospects and societal impact.

Highlighting the value of self-belief, Prof. Kyerematen urged the participants to take charge of their development by believing in their abilities and pursuing their goals proactively. She encouraged them to believe in their potential, be curious, courageous, and open to new ideas, challenges, and opportunities. Empowerment, she stressed, begins with self-assurance and a commitment to continuous learning.

The Empower Vault Summit aims to equip young people across Ghana with clarity of purpose, strong personal values, and practical tools for leadership, entrepreneurship, and personal growth. Through mentorship, networking, and knowledge-sharing, the platform provides participants with perspectives and experiences that help them navigate their educational, professional, and entrepreneurial paths.

The summit also offers young people a chance to engage with leaders and professionals, fostering the confidence and competencies necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.

Prof. Kyerematen’s message, therefore, emphasized the necessity for attendees to move beyond inspiration and transform their newfound knowledge into concrete actions. The annual summit is part of a broader effort by Horses and Stables and the University of Ghana SRC Vice President’s office to empower young people with the mindset, values, and competencies needed to thrive in a competitive world.
