Warren demands answers from RFK Jr. on 'calamitous' cyclosporiasis outbreak response

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren addressed Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., demanding answers regarding the administration's handling of the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak. In her letter, Warren expressed concerns that the administration's response was marred by missteps, suggesting that these missteps might be the result of incompetence and corruption.

The cyclosporiasis outbreak has seen at least 24,000 confirmed or suspected cases across 47 states, with two deaths and over 740 hospitalizations. Typically, there are only around 3,000 cases annually. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) traced nearly 10,000 cases to recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, distributed across 17 states.

Warren pointed out that Taco Bell provided clearer guidance to consumers than the FDA, CDC, and other federal food safety agencies. The letter also raises questions about whether the White House may have collaborated with Taylor Farms to delay public warnings about the tainted food supply. This claim is backed by a Wall Street Journal report that Taylor Farms lobbyists met with the White House requesting more time and proof before implicating the company.

Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled the contaminated lettuce on July 17, citing a timeline discrepancy. Despite this, Taylor Fresh Foods denied any political influence, stating their actions were motivated by consumer health and not by political contributions. The White House responded by claiming the outbreak was under control, stating they had identified the source and that relevant companies had implemented a recall.
