In a heartbreaking incident in Petaling Jaya, India national K Alagesan brutally attacked his fellow resident, Sugan Ganesan, with a stool, resulting in the latter's death. This tragic event unfolded on the morning of September 9, 2020, at a nursing home. Without warning, Alagesan struck Sugan multiple times on the head with the heavy stool, before fleeing the scene. Upon discovering the gruesome scene, the home's owner promptly contacted the police, who swiftly apprehended the suspect.

Alagesan, who confessed to the crime, was initially sentenced to 38 years in prison and 15 strokes of the cane in 2024. However, his legal team, led by Mokhtaruddin Baki, argued that his guilty plea saved time and resources for the court and the prosecution. Consequently, the Court of Appeal reduced his sentence to 35 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane, based on the plea bargain.

Despite this reduction, Alagesan's attempt at further reducing his sentence at the Federal Court failed, as Deputy Public Prosecutor Iznina Hanim Hashim represented the prosecution.
