Villa European Cup winner Rimmer dies at 78

Jimmy Rimmer, the former Aston Villa goalkeeper and part of the club's 1982 European Cup-winning team, passed away at the age of 78. Rimmer had an extensive career, playing for over two decades and becoming one of the few players to win the European Cup with two different English clubs. Aston Villa announced his passing on Friday, citing the club's statement that "Aston Villa have announced the passing of European Cup winner Jimmy Rimmer, who died at the age of 78."

Rimmer started his senior career with Manchester United and played in the 1968 European Cup-winning squad, though he did not participate in the final. After moving to Arsenal, he eventually joined Aston Villa, where he became the club's starting goalkeeper. Rimmer played a crucial role in Villa's 1980-81 First Division title victory and their historic European Cup triumph the following year.

Although he had to leave the match against Bayern Munich early due to an injury, Rimmer was honored as a member of the winning team and earned his second European Cup medal. Rimmer made 229 league appearances for Aston Villa and also played for England, earning one senior cap.
