Aston Villa legend Jimmy Rimmer, twice European Cup winner, dies at 78

Aston Villa’s legendary goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer, a twice European Cup winner, has passed away at the age of 78, according to a statement released by the club. Rimmer, who spent the majority of his career at Villa, achieved great success with the team, including winning the First Division title in 1981. However, his reputation is perhaps more closely associated with his unfortunate exit from the 1982 European Cup final.

In the final, Villa defeated Bayern Munich 1-0, but Rimmer suffered a neck injury after just nine minutes, leading to his substitution. This event marked the second time he was forced off the pitch during a European Cup final, having been on the bench during the 1968 final when Manchester United claimed the trophy against Benfica. Aston Villa expressed their deep sorrow over Rimmer's passing, emphasizing their support for his family and friends in this difficult time.

A one-cap England international, Rimmer began his professional career with Manchester United but never managed to secure a starting place. In 1974, he moved to Arsenal and later joined Aston Villa in 1977. After his unfortunate exit from the 1982 European Cup final, he was sold to Swansea in 1983 after making over 200 appearances for Villa.
