Verdict on AI-guided tour of modern Korea's history

In a recent test, an AI-generated tour itinerary for learning about modern Korean history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was field-tested. The traveler used Gemini to create a one-day plan, which included stops at Deoksu Palace, the Appenzeller Noble Memorial Museum, Seodaemun Prison, Gwanghwamun Gukbap and Coffee Hanyakbang.

To evaluate the effectiveness of the AI-generated itinerary, a Korea Times reporter visited each recommended destination. The experiment proved to be an illuminating experience, as the AI demonstrated its ability to plan the trip spatially, connecting major heritage sites to explore the desired historical period. The major sites were easily accessible by public transportation within the downtown area, showcasing the AI's proficiency in creating an efficient itinerary.

However, the AI did not perform as well when it came to understanding the actual on-the-ground conditions and providing in-depth, nuanced information at the sites. Language gaps at locations like Seodaemun Prison highlighted an informational shortfall rather than a flaw in the AI's functionality.
