USS Washington aircraft carrier heads to Middle East to replace USS Lincoln

The USS George Washington aircraft carrier is en route to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, according to a U.S. official. The Lincoln has been at sea for nearly nine months, raising concerns among some families about conditions on the ship. During a recent town hall, families expressed frustration over a lack of updates about the carrier's return to port.

The Navy typically avoids disclosing specific movement details to safeguard the vessel's security. The Lincoln initially sailed to the Pacific before being reassigned to the Middle East in advance of the Iran conflict. Some spouses of service members reported concerns about their partners' mental well-being, including rumors of sailors contemplating jumping overboard.

However, the Navy denied allegations of a mental health crisis, stating they have not identified a rise in suicidal ideation or attempts. There was a single incident of a sailor falling overboard earlier this month, which is currently under investigation. Families noted instances of food shortages during earlier stages of the deployment, though this issue has since been resolved.

The ship is operating in a volatile region where essential supply routes have been compromised by conflict. The Navy has ensured continuous access to crucial provisions, with clean water, functioning air conditioning, and healthy meals currently available. Despite criticism from some Democrats, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed reports of misrepresentation, emphasizing the Navy's commitment to providing comprehensive support to every ship and crew.

The USS George Washington departed from Yokosuka in Japan in May for a Pacific patrol and has since traversed the Strait of Malacca heading towards the Middle East, where it will join the USS George H.W. Bush carrier. This deployment will see the Pacific region without a carrier.
