US signs deals with Boeing, RTX to boost interceptor missile production

The U.S. Department of Defense has inked two framework agreements with aerospace giants Boeing and RTX to ramp up production of crucial interceptor missile components, amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. In a bid to bolster its munitions and missile defense capabilities, the Pentagon has signed these agreements to expedite output of key parts for the Standard Missile-3 Block IB (SM-3 IB) and the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA (SM-3 IIA).

These two missile types are vital components of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, serving as primary ship-launched interceptors for the US Navy in its maritime defense network.

Michael P. Duffy, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, emphasized that these agreements guarantee US troops the necessary munitions for mission success. He highlighted the department's ongoing efforts to stabilize supply chains, expand munitions production, and fortify the defense industrial base for wartime readiness.

The Pentagon attributed the signing of these agreements to its strategic shift in acquisition operations, which has streamlined bureaucratic procedures and enabled the department to engage with suppliers across the industrial base.

This move by the U.S. Department of Defense aims to exert pressure on defense contractors to accelerate the production of weapons and ammunition, following reports of dwindling stockpiles of critical weapons and defense systems used by US forces in the conflict with Iran. In recent months, the department has signed multiple framework agreements with prominent defense firms, concentrating on boosting supplies of affordable munitions and advanced weaponry, particularly air and missile defense systems.

These efforts have gained significant importance due to the substantial volume of munitions employed by Washington during the war with Iran.

Estimates from The Washington Post suggest that US forces deployed over 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles and more than 1,000 interceptor missiles from Patriot and THAAD systems in the first month of the conflict. Additionally, they utilized over 1,300 tactical ballistic missiles in the early weeks of the fighting.
