US Lost 45 MQ-9 Reaper Drones In War

According to The Washington Post, the United States has suffered significant losses in its MQ-9 Reaper drone fleet during the ongoing war with Iran. The Post reports that at least 45 of these high-cost drones have been lost, representing roughly 25% of the US fleet available for operations. The MQ-9 Reaper is a versatile aircraft used for both surveillance and targeted strikes, with a price tag ranging from $30 million to $50 million per unit, depending on the specific sensors and weapons it carries. The loss of these drones could potentially set taxpayers back by $1.3 billion.

Much of the drone activity has been concentrated over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that has been blockaded since the start of the Iran conflict. However, not all of the lost Reapers were confirmed to have been shot down; a fourth unnamed source told The Post that some may have crashed due to communication failures between ground operators and the drones. This adds to an increasingly long list of US weapons and munitions that have been depleted by the war in Iran.

In the first month of the Iran campaign, US forces have reportedly launched over 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles and more than 1,000 Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missiles, significantly depleting stocks of crucial long-range strike capabilities and the military's most sought-after air defense systems.
