Three months’ jail for man pleading guilty to offensive X posts against Terengganu royalty

A court in Sepang has sentenced a 35-year-old man to three months in jail for making offensive posts against the Terengganu royal family on the social media platform X. Azman Hakim Hassanuddin pleaded guilty to the five charges against him, which were brought under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The judge, Ahmad Fuad Othman, emphasized that offenses related to the royal institution, religion, and racial sensitivities must be treated seriously due to their potential societal impact. He highlighted the importance of respecting the principles of Decency, Morality, and Loyalty to the King and Country as outlined in the Rukun Negara.

The prosecution informed the court that Azman, a mental health patient, was deemed fit to stand trial and capable of defending himself as of June 24. He had initially requested a fine instead of jail time, citing his need for ongoing treatment and medication. The four offensive posts were allegedly made by Azman between February 19 and February 22, with the intent to annoy or intimidate others.

The judge stressed the need to uphold the dignity of the royal family and protect them from acts that diminish their respect.
