‘There was a lot of early-season rustiness’: Ponting blasts Aussie batsmen

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting criticized the batting performance of the Australian team during the opening Test match against Bangladesh at Darwin. Ponting stated that there was significant rustiness among the Australian team, who had not played for a long time. He expressed surprise that Australia chose to bat, considering Bangladesh had only scored 54 runs in the warm-up game.

The Australian seamers were expected to have an advantage on that wicket. Ponting singled out Steve Smith as the only Australian player who managed to score above 30 runs, with Smith's score of 71. Other than Smith, none of the Australian batsmen managed to get past 30 runs. Ponting highlighted that Australia dropped key players from the squad, including Michael Naser, Todd Murphy, and Brendan Doggett, who had recently played in the Ashes series.

The absence of young talent in the Australian team was another concern for Ponting, who felt that the team had missed an opportunity to incorporate some of the younger players they had. He criticized the current Australian team as the oldest since 1928 and emphasized that they would be going through a significant rebuilding phase with 21 Tests remaining until the end of the World Test Championship cycle.
