Swiatek beats Rybakina for first title of season

Iga Swiatek claimed her maiden WTA title of the season by defeating Elena Rybakina in the final of the Canadian Open on Thursday. The 25-year-old Polish tennis star secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the world number two, breaking Rybakina's serve twice and saving two break points in the first set. Despite making 12 unforced errors, Rybakina struggled in the opening set, unable to break Swiatek's serve.

In the second set, Rybakina failed to break Swiatek, and the Polish player clinched her 26th career title in just over an hour and a half. Swiatek expressed her happiness, stating that the past months had been challenging and that this victory meant a great deal to her. She will return to the top five in the rankings following her first Canadian Open final win.

The Australian Open champion, Rybakina, admitted defeat, acknowledging that her efforts were not enough to secure the title. Meanwhile, in the men's final, Ben Shelton won his second Canadian Open title, defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima in two straight sets. This victory marked Shelton's first Canadian Open win without dropping a set and his first successful defense of the title since Rafael Nadal in 2019.
