Thailand schools ramp up bag checks after deadly shooting sparks safety fears

Bangkok's Sawasdee Wittaya School is now implementing enhanced bag checks and security measures following a deadly shooting on August 7, which claimed the lives of five staff members, a student, and the assailant, a 14-year-old. The school, located in affluent neighborhoods, enrolls more than 500 students aged six to 12 and employs 30 teachers.

Headteacher Suparong Sawangngamwong explained that the new checks will ensure parents feel secure, knowing their children are in a safe learning environment. Previously, bag checks were limited to higher grades or students with behavioral issues, but now all students undergo the process. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has mandated schools under its jurisdiction to screen for weapons, maintain constant security, and enforce strict visitor protocols.

While the school already conducts emergency drills and has security guards on duty, Suparong acknowledged the need for additional funding to implement all necessary upgrades, including repairing broken CCTV cameras. The shooting has reignited discussions about firearm regulations in Thailand, a country with one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the region.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has called for stricter controls and penalties, but past attempts to tighten gun laws have not stopped previous incidents.
