Thailand heavy rain forecast covers 21 provinces today with strengthened monsoon

Thailand anticipates continuing heavy rainfall across 21 provinces today as a strengthening monsoon trough merges with a robust southwesterly wind. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) predicts the atmospheric disturbance to traverse Myanmar, upper Laos and northern Vietnam, with the monsoon dominating over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Low-lying and hilly regions are cautioned against potential flash floods and overflowing rivers, particularly in the Northeast. In the North, thunderstorms are anticipated to impact 60% of the region, with isolated heavy rain possible in Mae Hong Son, Nan and Tak. Temperatures are expected to fluctuate between 22 and 28°C, with peaks reaching 35°C.

The Northeast also experiences a 60% storm coverage, with isolated heavy rain forecast for Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan. The Central region encounters lighter coverage at 40%, with sporadic heavy rain in Saraburi and Kanchanaburi. The Eastern area is expected to face the gravest conditions, with 60% storm coverage and potential for very heavy rain in Chanthaburi and Trat, along with isolated heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok and Prachinburi.

Winds are projected to reach speeds of 20 to 35km/h, with waves rising to approximately two meters, intensifying during thunderstorms. On the southern east coast, thunderstorms are forecast to cover 40% of the area, primarily affecting Chumphon, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Along the west coast, 60% coverage is anticipated, with isolated heavy rain in Ranong and Phang Nga.

From Phang Nga northward, waves may reach 2 to 3 meters, potentially exceeding 3 meters in areas experiencing thunderstorms. In Bangkok and its neighboring provinces, 60% thunderstorm coverage is expected, accompanied by isolated heavy rain, temperatures of 26 to 27°C, and highs up to 34°C, as per Khaosod. Winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea are projected to remain relatively intense, with waves of 2 to 3 meters and potentially surpassing 3 meters during thunderstorms.

The TMD has urged boat operators to exercise caution and avoid thunderstorm zones, while small vessels in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain moored. Residents in impacted areas throughout Thailand are advised to remain vigilant for potential flash floods and landslide hazards, especially near waterways and low-lying regions, and to monitor official TMD updates as the monsoon trough persists across the country.
