Switzerland's Werro beats Olympic champion Hodgkinson for European 800m title

BIRMINGHAM, England, Aug 14 - Switzerland's Audrey Werro secured the European 800m title by outpacing Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson by a scant 1.2 seconds, in a race that saw Hodgkinson finish second in 1:55.01. Werro, 22, overtook Hodgkinson in the final 150 meters to cross the finish line in one minute 54.81 seconds. Hodgkinson's second-place finish was bittersweet, as she had previously won the same event.

Werro's victory was a remarkable turnaround after she suffered a significant fall in the semi-finals, but was reinstated for the final after it was determined that France's Anais Bourgoin had made contact with her foot before the tumble. Werro's triumph marks her first senior championship title, adding to her already impressive career.

Meanwhile, Norway's Karsten Warholm broke his own European record in the 400m hurdles, finishing in a stunning 46.63 seconds.
