안규백 “유엔사 경비여단 창설 않기로 합의”…유엔사 “조직 재편 추진 중”

South Korean Defense Minister Kang Kyung-wha and the United Nations Command (UNC) reached an agreement on 14th that they will not establish a new "UN Military Liaison Detachment" (UNMLD) despite ongoing disagreements over the command and management of the Joint Security Area (JSA). This development comes as tensions rise over the disputed management of the JSA between South Korea and the UNC.

The UN has been pursuing the creation of the UNMLD, which focuses on managing the ongoing ceasefire agreement and overseeing the management of the JSA and DMZ. The UN has stated that the initiative is aimed at organizing and improving the existing UN Command structure, not expanding its military capabilities or functions. However, the South Korean government has raised concerns about the potential for new conflicts arising from the establishment of the UNMLD.

Kang Kyung-wha confirmed during a press conference that the UNMLD will not be established. The UN reaffirmed its commitment to the initiative, emphasizing that it is not about expanding the UN Command's military capabilities or functions.
