Samay Raina gets relief: SC quashes Latent cases

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed criminal charges against YouTuber and comedian Samay Raina, as well as three other comedians, in connection with allegedly insensitive remarks about individuals with disabilities during the show "India's Got Talent". The five comedians involved were Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar (also known as Sonali Aditya Desai), and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar. The court's decision marks the end of the criminal proceedings against the individuals.

The bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana made the ruling, expressing appreciation for the efforts made by the five comedians to organize events supporting persons with disabilities. The court acknowledged that genuine efforts would lead to positive outcomes and praised their proactive approach. The bench concluded that the five young individuals are on the right path, and positive results are inevitable.

However, the Supreme Court emphasized that it would continue to examine the broader issue concerning safeguards for content involving persons with disabilities. The bench is anticipated to take into account suggestions from individuals with disabilities regarding measures that could enhance checks on online content and issue appropriate directions on the wider concerns related to this matter.
