President Mahama reiterates commitment to link regional capitals with good roads

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration's dedication to constructing thoroughfares connecting all regional capitals, highlighting the importance of improved transportation infrastructure to stimulate economic growth throughout Ghana. During a recent working visit, Mahama inspected the construction progress on the Chuchuliga-Chiana section of the Chuchuliga-Tumu-Wa road, a 260-kilometre route spanning the Upper East and Upper West regions.

The road, once completed, will enhance connectivity between the two regions and serve as a key link between Bolgatanga and Wa via Tumu. The President emphasized that the government's "Big Push" road initiative prioritizes major roads connecting regional capitals, while also improving major districts. The Chuchuliga-Chiana section, currently being built by MyTurn Construction Limited, had faced delays due to payment issues, but the government has since accelerated payments under the Big Push programme, guaranteeing contractor payments within 30 days of receiving necessary documentation.

Mahama is optimistic that the road will be fully constructed and inaugurated by 2028, improving the journey from Bolgatanga to Wa. He assured that roads not included in the initial Big Push phase will be addressed in subsequent phases, and the government is already planning a second and third phase to further enhance the country's road network.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, reported that the government has disbursed GH¢23.1 billion in payments to contractors, including arrears, which has allowed projects to resume and accelerate. Agbodza confirmed that the outstanding debts owed to contractors have been resolved and that other contractors involved in the Bolgatanga to Wa road project are also making progress, with completion expected by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027.

The President and his delegation were accompanied by various government officials, including Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Government Communications, among others.
