PPP slams gov't housing supply plan as lacking concrete measures

The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) harshly criticized the government's recently released housing plan on Friday, labeling it as a reiteration of earlier measures that fail to alleviate citizens' burdens and tackle housing shortages. This assessment came a day after the government unveiled a comprehensive package designed to augment housing supply and stabilize both the rental and sales markets, with a particular emphasis on Seoul and other high-demand areas within the capital region.

PPP floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig expressed his displeasure during a floor meeting, asserting that if the government persists in recycling previously announced measures and misleading the public with inflated numbers, even effective policies would eventually lose the trust of both the market and the populace. The government claims to have supplied over 1.5 million housing units, but Jeong highlighted that 1.35 million of these units are a result of a public housing supply plan spearheaded by the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, which was announced last year.

Rep. Jeong further pointed out that the government intends to provide approximately 240,000 additional homes, which includes 100,000 units at new public housing locations; however, only 27,000 units have been pinpointed so far. The remaining sites lack concrete locations, and the plan seems to be deficient in detailed information.

The latest housing package supplements the earlier housing supply plan proposed by the Lee Jae Myung administration, which aimed to construct 1.35 million homes in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province by 2030. The new plan also intends to accelerate the development of newly designated housing sites by drastically reducing the construction timeline from 68 months to a mere 37 months through a fast-track development model.

The PPP's chief spokesperson, Choi Bo-yun, released a statement on Thursday, expressing disappointment and frustration over the Lee administration's housing supply plan. Choi specifically criticized the limited housing supply envisaged for Seoul, noting the meager 1,000 units planned in the capital despite the area's robust demand.

Of the additional housing supply announced on Thursday, roughly 100,000 homes are slated to come from new public housing sites, including 1,000 homes in the Gangseo district of Seoul.
