Pokuase Timber Market traders protest planned demolition, relocation

Traders at the Pokuase Timber Market in Ga North Municipality have staged a protest against proposals to demolish and relocate their shops. The traders claim the demolition could jeopardize their livelihoods and have appealed to the Ga North Municipal Chief Executive, Akwetey Agbo, to reconsider the decision. The traders assert they have operated at the site for years, selling timber and other items in front of a private residence.

They argue the land is privately owned, not state land, citing the presence of a high-tension installation as the only government asset in the vicinity. The traders' leader, Nana Kyeremateng, explained that an alternative site has been offered, but an inspection revealed it to be a forested area with construction underway. The traders previously backed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 elections based on promises they believed would enhance their earnings.

Nana Kyeremateng expressed disappointment, stating that they were once supporters of the NDC due to election promises, yet now face potential eviction and loss of income. He urged the Municipal Chief Executive to engage with the traders and avoid actions that may harm their businesses. Nana Kyeremateng emphasized that the traders are not against development but want any relocation to be conducted transparently and in a way that safeguards their economic interests.
