Pakistan's leadership stresses need for unity, reforms as nation celebrates Independence Day

Pakistan's civilian and military leadership has emphasized the importance of unity and reforms as the country commemorates 79 years of independence. The day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute at provincial headquarters. A change of guards ceremony took place at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi.

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam, the architects of the Pakistan Movement, and those who sacrificed for the nation. He stated that independence is not just a historic achievement but a responsibility to be carried forward by each generation. President Zardari stressed that the nation must continue to grow stronger, more secure, and prosperous, building upon the achievements of earlier generations.

In his address, President Zardari reminded citizens of the year's brief military conflict with India, highlighting the strength of the Pakistani nation. He praised the resolve and capacity of Pakistan to defend its sovereignty and national interests. The president also acknowledged the sacrifices of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and police, expressing gratitude for their courage and commitment in safeguarding the nation.

Zardari emphasized that Pakistan's security is closely tied to the peace and stability of its neighborhood and the world. He reiterated that all disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, as a country's security is linked to the peace and stability of its region and the world.

The president urged the country to focus on strengthening its economy, creating opportunities for young people, improving education, and implementing governance, economic, and social reforms. He stressed that the strength of Pakistan will ultimately be measured by how national progress improves the lives of its people.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the president's sentiments, paying tribute to the founding leaders of Pakistan. He highlighted the government's economic achievements over the past two and a half years, noting the increase in remittances from overseas Pakistanis and the country's goal of becoming a developed economy. The prime minister also discussed the government's efforts to promote modern information technology, innovation-driven industrial and agricultural development, and employment opportunities.
