Pakistan's leadership stresses need for unity, reforms as nation celebrates Independence Day

Pakistan's civilian and military leaders emphasized the importance of unity and reform as the country celebrated its 79th Independence Day. At various locations including the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi, a 31-gun salute was fired in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute at provincial headquarters to mark the occasion.

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam, the architects of the Pakistan Movement, and those who sacrificed their homes, security, and livelihoods in the struggle for an independent nation. He stressed that while independence was a historic achievement, it was also a responsibility that each generation must carry forward.

Zardari reminded citizens that the past year had highlighted the strength of the Pakistani nation, recalling the brief military conflict with India. He emphasized that while Pakistan seeks peace, it also possesses the resolve and capacity to defend its sovereignty and national interests. The president highlighted the sacrifices made by the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and police, expressing deep gratitude for their service.

He also underscored Pakistan's efforts to facilitate regional dialogue and de-escalation, stating that the country would continue to support efforts that reduce tensions and promote regional stability. Pakistan's focus, according to the president, should be on economic growth, creating opportunities for young people, improving education and skills, and strengthening institutions through governance, economic, and social reforms.

President Zardari called on the nation to contribute to the country's progress in whatever field they serve, emphasizing Pakistan's commitment to defending its national interests. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, paying tribute to the founding leaders and highlighting the government's economic achievements over the past two-and-a-half years.
