'Our interests are the same': BCI chairman Manan Mishra's first reaction to CJP amid NALSAR-CJI row

Bar Council of India chairman Manan Mishra expressed on Friday that the interests of the CJP and the BCI align, with a shared goal to protect student rights. This came after the BCI froze enrolments for the 2026 graduating batch at NALSAR University of Law due to opposition from some students to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant serving as the chief guest at the convocation.

Mishra clarified that an order regarding judicial internships has been withdrawn following an emergency Council meeting, ensuring no loss for law students in securing judiciary internships. The BCI emphasized its intention to prevent any obstacles for students, noting past restrictions on judicial internships. The issue began when NALSAR students opposed CJI Surya Kant's participation due to his remarks in a Supreme Court hearing related to police excesses during a student demonstration.
