Osun Election: IPC deploys AI to protect journalists

The International Press Centre (IPC) has introduced a WhatsApp-powered artificial intelligence system called WAFLO to safeguard journalists during the upcoming Osun State governorship election. The system, unveiled by the IPC's Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, will be tested as a pilot during the election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

WAFLO is designed to capture and document incidents such as assaults, threats, and infringements on journalists' rights that may occur during the election. This real-time reporting tool aims to ensure that incidents affecting journalists are promptly reported, verified, and addressed. The technology will enable journalists to report safety concerns as they happen, providing stakeholders with crucial information to respond swiftly to potential threats or assaults.

WAFLO is part of a larger EU-funded initiative, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase Two, and will be expanded for the 2027 general elections. The IPC is collaborating with the Centre for Media and Society and key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists, to bolster journalists' safety during elections.

Journalists are encouraged to utilize the WAFLO reporting channel through the SafeMedia WhatsApp prompt or by texting "safemedia" to 0805 877 8053. They are also advised to maintain proper accreditation, carry identification, and adhere to IPC Safety Advisory tips to minimize disruptions during the election. The IPC urges security agencies, political actors, election stakeholders, and other authorities to respect journalists' rights to perform their constitutional and professional duties without fear or interference.
