ODPP warns on misinformation as justice sector prepares for 2027 polls

Kenya's Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has warned against misinformation as justice sector entities gear up for the 2027 General Election. This warning came during a two-day workshop organized by International Justice Mission (IJM) Kenya, where communication officers from various justice institutions and media practitioners collaborated.

The sessions, led by Peter Okumu from the ODPP's Public Affairs and Corporate Communication Division, covered election readiness, crisis management, responsible reporting, fact-checking, and mental health. The discussions revolved around the significance of timely, accurate communication to preserve public trust, institutional credibility, and the accessibility of reliable information during election campaigns.

Participants explored how to manage information dissemination during periods of heightened political activity, including who should communicate, when, and how. They also stressed the importance of exercising caution with unverified information to prevent the spread of false narratives. The event gathered representatives from the ODPP, Witness Protection Agency, Independent Policing Oversight Authority, National Police Service, National Police Service Commission, and Internal Affairs Unit.

Additionally, participants from the Court Reporters Association of Kenya and Crime Journalists Association of Kenya contributed their insights. Officials stressed that accurate and verified communication is crucial for maintaining public confidence and ensuring citizens receive dependable information during the election period. The workshop served as a platform for media professionals and government communicators to exchange experiences and address challenges in their respective fields.

The conversations are particularly relevant as misinformation has become a significant concern ahead of the 2027 polls. In June 2026, President William Ruto accused opposition leaders of spreading false narratives during public gatherings, highlighting instances where politicians used loudspeakers in markets, churches, and funerals to disseminate unsubstantiated claims.

Ruto also cited disruptions caused by politicians' appearances at religious and funeral events, which he claimed interfered with the daily lives of ordinary citizens. The president responded to these claims by pointing to his administration's development initiatives in Western Kenya, such as the revival of sugar companies, faster payments to farmers, and the construction of new hospitals.

At the ODPP-led workshop, participants focused on enhancing communication between justice institutions and the media while ensuring the public receives verified information. The engagement included team-building activities and counseling sessions to assist officers coping with the stress of their roles. The event brought together key entities involved in criminal justice and media reporting as they prepare for the upcoming election.
