Not just train stops: ECRL stations are getting a Malaysian glow-up, telling East Coast stories

GOMBAK, Aug 14 — Every significant East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) station is a vivid tribute to the state's heritage, history, and culture, turning each stop into a vibrant display of the local identity, rather than just a transportation point. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook explained that this strategy ensures the ECRL development highlights the cultural and heritage uniqueness of communities along its route.

"Take the Kota Bharu ECRL Station in Bandar Batu Tunjong, for instance. It showcases the traditional Malay 'Rumah Meleh' architectural concept with 'Bunga Ketam Guri' motifs, safeguarding Kelantan's cultural identity within a contemporary setting." Loke highlighted the Kuala Terengganu Station design, inspired by boat and wave elements, symbolizing Terengganu's maritime identity, a fitting homage to its longstanding heritage of handcrafted traditional wooden boats.

Speaking at the launch of the Comprehensive Inspection Train (CIT), the unveiling of ECRL's main station design concepts, and the commencement of System Integration Testing (SIT) and Fault-Free Run (FFR) at the Gombak Integrated Terminal Station, Loke noted in Pahang the KotaSAS Station design draws inspiration from the state crest, featuring the 'Gading Gajah' (elephant tusk).

The Gombak Integrated Terminal Station, meanwhile, takes cues from the Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge, a 14-kilometre-long quartz formation. Loke explained that the geometric design of the Gombak station was inspired by the natural fort-like shape of the quartz ridge, embodying natural beauty. The 26-month construction on the 9.96-hectare site has now reached 98.96 per cent, with completion expected this September.

Loke reported that overall progress for ECRL Phase 1, spanning from Kota Bharu to Gombak, has reached 95.08 per cent as of July. "With this promising advancement, I am confident that the public will soon enjoy the ECRL services as scheduled. The East Coast community can anticipate returning home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri on the ECRL next year," he stated.

The ECRL project is now transitioning into its testing and commissioning phase, including SIT and FFR for the Kota Bharu-Gombak stretch, laying the groundwork for commercial operations slated to commence this December, ahead of the initially planned January launch. Zhang Bingnan, president of China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC), emphasized that the commencement of SIT and FFR marks a crucial milestone toward the project's completion, handover, and seamless operation.

He affirmed CCCC's unwavering commitment to high standards, quality, and efficiency in delivering a resilient rail system that benefits communities along the route.
