Not just train stops: ECRL stations are getting a Malaysian glow-up, telling East Coast stories

GOMBAK, Aug 14 — Every significant East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) station embodies its state's heritage, history, and culture, converting each stop into a living exhibit of local identity, not merely a transportation hub. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook explained that this strategy ensures ECRL development highlights the cultural and heritage uniqueness of communities along its path.

He provided examples: Kota Bharu ECRL Station in Bandar Batu Tunjong showcases the traditional 'Rumah Meleh Melayu' architectural style, incorporating 'Bunga Ketam Guri' motifs, preserving Kelantan's cultural identity within a contemporary setting. The Kuala Terengganu Station design is inspired by maritime elements, symbolizing Terengganu's tradition of handcrafted wooden boats.

Speaking at the launch of the Comprehensive Inspection Train (CIT), the unveiling of ECRL's primary station design concepts, and the commencement of System Integration Testing (SIT) and Fault-Free Run (FFR) at the Gombak Integrated Terminal Station, Loke highlighted Pahang's KotaSAS Station design, which draws inspiration from the state crest, featuring the 'Gading Gajah' (elephant tusk).

The Gombak Integrated Terminal Station's design is influenced by the Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge, a 14-kilometer-long natural quartz formation. The 26-month construction of the 9.96-hectare site has reached 98.96 percent completion, with full completion expected in September. The ECRL Phase 1, linking Kota Bharu and Gombak, has achieved 95.08 percent development as of July.

Loke expressed optimism that the public will soon experience ECRL services as planned. The East Coast community can anticipate returning home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri next year via the ECRL. The ECRL project is now entering its testing and commissioning phase, with SIT and FFR for the Kota Bharu-Gombak stretch, leading to commercial operations slated for December, ahead of the original January target.

China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) president Zhang Bingnan stated that the start of SIT and FFR marks a crucial milestone towards the project's completion, handover, and smooth operation. He affirmed CCCC's commitment to delivering a durable rail system that benefits communities along the route, maintaining high standards, quality, and efficiency.
