Nigerian arrested, two suspects dead as Ghana police foil bank robbery

A Nigerian man, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has been arrested after Ghanaian police thwarted a planned bank robbery in Accra. The incident took place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in the Labone area of the capital. According to police, intelligence had been received about an imminent attack on GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank. Officers were dispatched to the location around 10:45 am and discovered suspects in vehicles parked close to the banks.

One of the vehicles was pursued by police and Maazi was apprehended, while the other vehicle's occupants opened fire, resulting in a shootout that claimed the lives of two suspects. Police seized two vehicles - a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson - along with a blow pistol. Maazi is currently in custody and aiding the investigation, while the deceased suspects' bodies have been sent to a morgue for further examination.
