Nigel Farage wins election in which his main rival was a trash can

As the leader of the populist hard-right Reform UK party, Farage emerged triumphant with 22,239 votes, beating his opponent Count Binface by 1,000 votes.

Binface, who is self-described as an intergalactic space warrior, garnered 9,455 votes, indicating a notable anti-Farage sentiment even in one of Britain's most right-leaning regions. Farage posted on social media, stating, "The result in Clacton speaks for itself," without giving a victory speech due to concerns over potential disruptions.

Essex Police confirmed there were no incidents during the count, which is rarely attended by the winning candidate. Farage, a prominent anti-immigrant activist and Brexit architect, had already represented Clacton in parliament but resigned due to financial scrutiny. This by-election was intended to appeal directly to Farage's electorate, but it quickly became a subject of ridicule, with critics labeling it a "circus."

The affair has also reignited debates over Reform UK's financial transparency. Meanwhile, Farage faces challenges from within his own coalition and from Britain's new center-left prime minister, Andy Burnham. Additionally, an investigation into Farage's finances by the parliamentary standards committee will resume, which could trigger further by-elections if any breaches are found.
