NHIA releases GH¢35.1 million for Free Primary Healthcare services

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) disbursed GH¢35.1 million to initiate the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme in 107 districts of Ghana. This payment was made during the launch of the programme in Dodowa on April 15, 2023. President John Dramani Mahama was present at the event.

FPHC, a population-based model of healthcare financing, operates independently from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). It aims to provide predictable, upfront funding to participating districts for preventive care. The programme focuses on community-based health planning and services (CHPS) to deliver regular screenings and health education to populations that may not otherwise access healthcare facilities.

Services covered under FPHC include routine checks for conditions like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cancers, as well as maternal and child health services, and treatment of common illnesses such as malaria, cholera, and respiratory infections. Community outreach activities are also supported, including home visits, school and workplace engagements, and public education campaigns.

Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the NHIA Chief Executive, emphasized that FPHC's goal is to keep Ghanaians healthier by promoting early detection of health issues. Referrals to higher-level healthcare facilities still require a valid NHIS card. The Authority reconfirmed its commitment to expanding the programme's reach across Ghana, as it works to improve access to preventive and promotive healthcare services for communities nationwide.
