New wildfire forces hundreds to evacuate in France

A new wildfire in southwestern France has forced the evacuation of over 500 people, officials reported on Friday. The fire, which broke out in the department of Landes on Thursday, has scorched 1,100 hectares of land. With much of the country currently under a heatwave, the blaze was exacerbated by tinderbox conditions. Firefighters have been on the scene, with 500 personnel deployed to combat the flames.

Forecasts predict that the next fifteen hours will be pivotal in the firefighting efforts. The fire chief cautioned that while the flames are currently slowing, potential flare-ups cannot be ruled out as temperatures are expected to soar to 36C later on Friday. At the stroke of midnight, the fire was mere hundreds of meters away from Luglon, a small village nestled within the pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne nature park.

Fortunately, no residences were destroyed in the conflagration. However, thick smoke engulfed the village in an ominous haze on Friday morning. Despite the efforts of firefighters, they managed to safeguard the houses from the onslaught of the fire. French authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage inflicted by the series of fires, particularly those ravaging the southwest of France, including the largest wildfire to afflict the region since 1949 in the département of Gironde.
