NATO shoots down drone in Latvian airspace

NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace, marking a second such incident in the country. This follows a similar incident in June, when a foreign drone was also intercepted and downed by NATO jets. The military alliance has launched an investigation into the latest incident, as concerns intensify across Europe regarding unauthorized drone activity during Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.

The first drone incursion in Latvia took place in June, when NATO jets intercepted and neutralized the foreign unmanned aerial vehicle. Both Russia and Ukraine heavily utilize drones for attacks in the conflict. It remains unclear from which origin the most recent drone launched from. Two Italian Eurofighter jets, along with two Turkish F-16 fighter jets, were scrambled in response to the drone intrusions.

NATO confirmed that all aircraft were operating under their command, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway. Latvian foreign minister Baiba Braze expressed gratitude to Italy for preserving NATO airspace integrity. Lithuanian foreign minister Kestutis Budrys highlighted that the Italian fighter jets were deployed in Siauliai, northern Lithuania, as part of NATO's expanded air defense mission.

Latvia, along with other NATO member states in Eastern Europe, including Romania and Poland, has faced repeated drone incursions along its eastern border with Russia. NATO allies emphasized during a recent meeting that Russia is solely responsible for these airspace violations, deeming them dangerous and unacceptable, and emphasizing Russia's growing tolerance for risk.

Finland temporarily imposed aviation and maritime restrictions in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precautionary measure to ensure safety and counter potential drone threats. French fighter jets from NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission had previously shot down a drone in Latvia in June, becoming the first in the alliance to down a stray drone over the country.

Meanwhile, German authorities discovered an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig airport, and Hanover airport faced operational disruptions after a drone entered restricted airspace.
