Nationals to move All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams to second base

The Washington Nationals have announced that shortstop CJ Abrams will be moving to second base, ending his five-season tenure at that position. Manager Blake Butera revealed that Abrams has started working out at second base, with the team expecting the transition to be gradual rather than immediate. Abrams and second baseman Nasim Nuñez will swap spots, with the Nationals aiming to utilize both players at the crucial infield positions.

Butera emphasized that this move is in the best interest of the team, as Abrams' offensive skills can be better utilized with Nuñez playing second base. However, Butera acknowledged that shortstops often have a strong affinity for the position, which Abrams admitted to as well. Abrams, who led the National League in errors at second base, is having a standout offensive season with 28 homers, 91 RBIs, a .284 average, and an .898 OPS.

Despite his impressive numbers, Abrams has committed 19 errors at second base, which would be a career low. The Nationals have also drafted shortstops Seaver King and Eli Willits in recent years, with Willits being the team's top prospect. Butera stated that the team is considering all factors, with the primary goal being to maximize wins for the remainder of the season and set themselves up for success in the following year.
