‘My Police Station’: Kerala to transform 484 police stations under new public-friendly plan

Kerala plans to overhaul all 484 police stations as part of the 'My Police Station' initiative, aiming to make them more welcoming, accessible, and technologically advanced. Chief Minister VD Satheesan launched the programme at Peroorkada police station in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, emphasizing that the transformation is about more than aesthetic changes.

The revamped stations will feature uniform colour schemes across the state, but the real difference will lie in their operations. Dedicated help desks will cater to specific groups, including women, children, senior citizens, transgender individuals, and persons with disabilities. Separate desks will address cybercrime and legal assistance needs.

The aim is to create a police force that is more approachable, accountable, and adept at utilizing technology. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala urged citizens to approach police stations without fear and cooperate with officers, citing Operation Toofan's success as proof of the public-policing partnership. Chennithala also stressed adherence to Supreme Court guidelines on arrests and police procedures, particularly in light of past custodial deaths that have tarnished the force's reputation.

CCTV cameras are already installed in all police stations to enhance transparency. From Friday, young Sub-Inspectors, including 63 women officers, will serve as Station House Officers. The government also plans to prioritize the mental well-being of police personnel, offering stress management training and suicide prevention measures.

Chennithala stressed that the transformation has already commenced, emphasizing the need for the police to continue adapting to evolving societal requirements.
