Murkomen urges opposition leaders to emulate Kalonzo’s national politics

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged opposition leaders to adopt former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka's approach to national politics, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining a national focus despite years in the opposition. Speaking at the 61st Graduation Ceremony of Scott Christian University in Machakos on August 14, 2026, Murkomen called for unity and peaceful engagement ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He acknowledged his political rivalry with Musyoka but praised the former Vice President for keeping his messaging national throughout his opposition career. "I wish the other competitors would come to this church," Murkomen stated, suggesting that other opposition leaders could benefit from Musyoka's focus on national issues. He criticized the current political climate, which he said glorifies tribalism and division rather than promoting unity.

Murkomen urged Kenyans to support leaders who engage in peaceful and issue-based campaigns and advised politicians to conduct their meetings peacefully, discouraging people with opposing views from attending rallies they do not support. He also emphasized the importance of supporting Kenya's long-term development agenda, represented by the 'Beyond Vision 2030' framework, regardless of election outcomes.

Murkomen called for all political leaders to participate in shaping the country's long-term development trajectory, praising Scott Christian University for its role in education, skills development, and national transformation. The government, under the Kenya Kwanza administration, has been investing in human capital, reforming higher education financing, increasing teacher recruitment, and building classrooms and laboratories to provide practical, industry-relevant skills to young Kenyans.
