Msitugawanye: Matiang’i warns govt leaders against stirring tensions ahead of 2027

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Leader of the Jubilee Party, Fred Matiang’i, has cautioned government officials against fueling ethnic and political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election in Kenya. Addressing residents in Narok on August 14, 2026, Matiang’i emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and economic activity.

He urged Kenyans to prioritize their livelihoods and security over political confrontations, stating that they are more interested in living peacefully and conducting business than engaging in political disputes.

Matiang’i advised residents to reject attempts by politicians to divide them along ethnic or political lines, emphasizing that ordinary Kenyans are capable of coexisting and working together without conflict. He accused unnamed government leaders of "beating war drums" and cautioned them against introducing political tensions into communities that, according to him, have been living together harmoniously.

The ex-Interior CS's warning comes amid growing political activity as parties and presidential contenders prepare for the 2027 elections. He expressed concern over the brewing land and security disputes in Narok, which have occasionally threatened the region's peaceful coexistence. In May 2026, authorities intervened to resolve a land dispute in Majimoto Village, Narok South, involving concerns over land ownership and insecurity.

The situation escalated to violence, with residents clashing with police and prison warders at Narok High Court in June while attempting to free a murder suspect linked to the land issue.

Matiang’i placed economic development at the forefront of his appeal, arguing that Narok's potential is being hindered by poor governance, land disputes, and political interference. He attributed the county's economic challenges to political greed, poor leadership, and unchecked commercial interests. In April, he accused political leaders of failing in their responsibilities, leading to ongoing land disputes and hindrances to development.

Matiang’i has urged leaders from both the government and opposition to prioritize national unity as political activity intensifies in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
