Mozambique: 1.4 Tons of Fentanyl Seized At Maputo International Airport

Maputo — Mozambique's National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) announced the seizure of 1.4 tons of fentanyl at the Maputo International Airport cargo terminal. A 31-year-old Mozambican national was arrested during the operation for involvement in cargo management. The operation, launched on intelligence following reported narcotics arriving on a shipment, followed the cargo from Campinas, Brazil, through Luanda, Angola, to Maputo, destined for three scheduled arrivals between August 1 and 11, 2026.

SERNIC agents monitored the cargo, identifying it as fentanyl in liquid form hidden within cosmetic bottles. The seizure, similar to a June 2026 operation, marked one of Mozambique's most substantial drug busts, raising concerns about the country's role in transnational drug trafficking. Authorities are intensifying surveillance of supply chains and international corridors to prevent similar incidents.
