Many Canadians are boycotting the US, so this is where they're travelling instead

Prior to Donald Trump's re-election, Kent Truscott and his family from London, Ontario, frequently travelled to the United States. However, since late 2024, they have decided to boycott the US. This decision led them to cancel a trip to Texas in favor of spending time in Atlantic Canada. Truscott and his wife rented a car, hiked the Cabot Trail, and stayed at a resort on the Atlantic Ocean.

The boycott has resulted in a loss of approximately C$3.3bn ($2.35bn; £1.75bn) in travel revenue for the US last year. Some American cities and states have attempted to attract Canadian tourists through discounts and special deals. Lynda Rousseau and her husband Joe, who retired to Canada from Texas, cancelled their cruise plans and opted for cruises through Rome and Barcelona instead.

They prefer to cross the border only occasionally to pick up mail. Nick Smith, a Vancouver retiree, had previously stopped taking road trips to Seattle and major US national parks during Trump's presidency, and he remains reluctant to visit the US. Smith has even chosen to travel to Morocco and avoid American cities altogether. Christie Mitchell, who has made numerous trips to the US, has also avoided the country due to the current relationship between Canada and the US.
