Man jailed 3 months for insulting, threatening Terengganu royals

An unemployed man from Terengganu, Azman Hakim Hassanuddin, has been sentenced to three months in prison for posting insulting and threatening content about the Terengganu royal family on social media platform X. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman from Sepang sessions court emphasized that offenses involving the monarchy, religion, and race must be taken seriously, as they can have broader societal impacts.

Azman pleaded guilty to five charges, all of which were under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which deals with misuse of network facilities and carries a potential penalty of up to two years in prison or a fine of RM500,000. During sentencing, Judge Fuad noted that Azman had appealed for a reduced sentence, citing a need for psychiatric treatment. The prosecutor confirmed that Azman was found fit to stand trial by Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta.
