Man jailed 3 months for insulting, threatening Terengganu royals

An unemployed 35-year-old man, Azman Hakim Hassanuddin, was sentenced to three months in prison for posting insulting and threatening content targeting the Terengganu royal family on the social media platform X. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman, presiding over the Sepang sessions court, emphasized that offences involving the monarchy, religion, and race must be taken seriously due to their potential wider societal impact.

Azman pleaded guilty to all five charges framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which carries a maximum penalty of RM500,000 fine, up to two years imprisonment, or both. In sentencing Azman, the judge acknowledged his appeal for a lighter sentence due to a psychiatric condition, but noted that Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta had found him fit to stand trial.
